Energy and Sustainability

The course offers an overview of energy resources and use with emphasis on long-term sustainability; considers fossil, hydro, nuclear, and alternative energy sources, electricity and transportation, energy conversions, energy efficiency, energy security, and environmental impact.
In our lectures we will discuss the following engineering concepts:

  • Fundamental physical concepts of energy, power, energy density, and energy efficiency.
  • Concept of continuous energy transformation.
  • Concept of energy return on energy invested.
  • Concept of levelized cost of energy, capital cost per unit of power for various energy-generating technologies.

Introduction to Engineering for Sustainable Development

Engineers in the industry workforce need to update their skills with a more standardized instruction focused on sustainable engineering to allow them to find sustainable solutions for engineering challenges with a holistic approach to problems of society, economy, and environment. With the foundation and technical knowledge supported by systems thinking, multidisciplinary technical and business-oriented sustainability training, along with practical engineering applications, this short course will help the industry professional to analyze and confront the challenges found in modern engineering practice.

Professional Certificate in Nuclear Safeguards Fundamentals

Earn a professional certificate and 3.0 CEUs in the fundamentals of nuclear safeguards. The program consists of several courses that, combined, take approximately 30 hours to complete. The modules for this program include introductions to nuclear security and safeguards, commercial nuclear fuel cycle, and statistics; nuclear material accountancy; containment and surveillance; and more.

Professional Certificate in Nuclear Security Fundamentals

The Professional Certificate in Nuclear Security Fundamentals provides training in the areas of basic nuclear and atomic physics, basic radiation detection, nuclear security threat assessment, nuclear security culture, physical protection systems, and insider threats. It represents approximately 30 hours of online coursework, for which participants can earn 3 CEUs.
